OPENING RECEPTION:
FIRST FRIDAY, August 1st 2008

Painter and jewelry designer extraordinaire, Jesse Utt is a recent transplant from NYC to Portlandia. He is a renown and prolific creator fine art as well as reknowned jewelry designer, from handpainted canvas wrist-cuffs to earrings sporting his graphic comic-book aesthetic, to creative assemblage jewelry incorporating chain, feathers, gemstones, vintage components and found oddities. This urban-inspired accessory line, also known as Zachary Pryor, is also carried at REDUX.

While moving apartments from Manhattan to Queens, artist Jesse Utt put his foot through one of his most prized paintings, a painting depicting his version of Queen Esther from the Bible and Ganymedes from Greek mythology. Not wanting to lose the most important part of this painting, he fashioned it into a canvas wrist cuff with some jewel snaps purchased at the Jewish fabric store and he became Jesse Utt, accessory designer. On the subway and on the streets of New York everyone would ask where he got this cuff, where could they get one. And so, Zachary Pryor, urban inspired accessories was born. Zachary, from the name his mother had wanted him to name him so badly and Pryor, from the maiden name of his most loved relative, with whom he felt a strong soul connection, his grandmother, Queva.
Jesse has created several unusual styles of accessories for the fashion forward, catering to the truly original, edgier few who happily don his funky cuffs, asymetrical neckace creations or a pair of feather earrings.

Zachary Pryor accessories have been featured in Maxim magazine on Nicky Hilton, Time Out New York Fall 2004, InStyle Spring 2005, on Showtimes "The L Word," on the daytime dramas "One Life to Live" and "All My Children," worn by Avril Lavigne during the 2004 MTV movie awards, John Tartaglia (Tony Award nominated actor in Avenue Q), Mary-Kate Olsen and Shirley Manson.
His first line, for which he has received and is still receiving consumer and media attention, is based upon his comic-inspired sketch-work. The line of fully painted enamel-like earrings, canvas cuffs, belts and buckles and dog tag chains feature images of everything from flora and fauna to screaming comic book super villains to images of the city-dwellers and hipsters that exist within his mind and on the streets of the many cities he has resided in. These pieces are completely unique and each one is a one-of-a-kind. What makes them even better is that they look equally great on both men and women.

Animal portraiture by local illustrator:
Ryan Berkley
FIRST FRIDAY OPENING RECEPTION: Sept 5th
6-9:30pm
This stately tiger has seen a battle or two in his time. He is well decorated, his ranking is General, and, believe it or not, he's a pretty nice guy. He is quite a good luck charm if you bring him along to your board game party.

This stately cardinal is dressed to the nines. I recently saw my first cardinal on a road trip in Nashville and it was very exciting. He was just hanging out outside a bank on a Sunday. That one wasn't dressed as nicely as this gent, however. Still, maybe they are related somehow.

This buck has a bit of a dual personality. He gets all his clothing imported from Italy yet he loves listening to Bob Dylan . At first glance you might think he is a little egotistical but he's actually one of the nicest deer I've ever met. He'd love to pour you a glass of brandy.
Or beer.

Betty the squirrel is still occasionally recognized on the street from her days as a folk musician. Many years ago she played guitar and tambourine for a fairly successful folk trio. She is still playing music but now her main audience are her five grandchildren. She loves writing a new song for each one on their birthday.

Ryan Berkley creates comic book inspired art, prints, and whatever other fun things come to mind. His medium of choice is markers and colored pencils.
He lives in Portland with his wife Lucy and their ceramic roadrunner Winston.

June 08: Kate Durkin- Years of experimentation led her to discover that she could successfully manipulate a piece's composition while integrating a wide range of subjects by cutting up the canvas, creating groups of little pieces, and stitching them back together. This discovery liberated her from traditional notions of the painting process, both allowing her to be more deliberate with her composition choices and forcing her to relinquish control.
May 08: Kristin-Marie- Collections of fascinating objects have been painstakingly rendered and reassembled in Kristin's work. She reinterprets tiny objects withing new settings in 3-dimensional ways.
April 08: Dr Medz.

His work puts special emphasis on the compelling nature of memory and our fragile bonds to family, friends and community.
August 07: P. Williams
P. Williams current series of work is an exploration of the relationship between humans and nature. The work looks at the plastic divide between humans and the world at large, as well as the tragedy and disasters that come from ignoring the seemingly benign.
July 07: Joseph Valentino
Utilizing a multiple exposure trick to construct double and triple layered ghostlike images, Joe then modifies them with topographical illustrations and letter transfers, pushing the possibilities of what can be done with Polaroid film. The result combines his meditative line designs with geometric repetition and allusions to favorite themes like nature, people, film television stills, and urban decay.

March 07:
Using historical imagery, primarily from advertising campaigns of the 50’s, Kelly Williams Ray's pieces often take a satirical, tongue-in-cheek approach to current issues. Using the graphic nature of the silk-screen process to fuse bright pictures onto colorful vintage men’s neckties, Kelly produces stunning (and wearable) pieces of political and social commentary.
February 07: Rebecca Haacke
Rebecca makes use of a fragrant, unrefined beeswax, an infinitely malleable medium which encases the image with a sensuous and emotional tonality. January 07: Kendra Binney
REDUX is proud to present the hauntingly beautiful work of Kendra Binney, a very talented painter creating small works on wood with multi textural embeddings of organic materials, illustrated paper and paint. These works often contain newsprint and lettering, vintage photography, paint, attachments of metal wire and nails. Constantly pushing the boundaries of assemblage with her brilliant use of color, texture, words and images, Liz conveys the multidimensionality of life and all it’s curious representations.
September 06: Jenna Robertson
Jenna Robertson- creates sewing machine-stitched collages using luxurious recycled wool. The textures and colors of angora, lambswool and cashmere and the simultaneous movement and pinned-down stillness of the thread have inspired this series of birds and butterflies.
August 06: Lucia Johnson
Lucia Johnson begins by building her works out of recycled found materials. Ingredients vary from acrylic sheeting, ancient windows, acrylic paint, wood panels or MDF. Most completed works are a combination of multiple painted layers on glass or clear acrylic sheets stacked up inside a box frame to create a multi-dimensional effect. The layering moves as the viewer does, resulting in a most hallucinatory experience.
